Slate Run Ramble

The Slate Run Ramble begins at the Slate Run Recreational Parking Area in Slate Run, Lycoming County, located in the Pine Creek Valley along PA Route 414 between Morris and Waterville. The parking area is at the foot of the road bridge over Pine Creek. This long day hike traverses some of the wildest and most rugged country Pennsylvania has to offer. Hikers will enjoy five of the Black Forest Trail’s most spectacular vistas, as well as several fun stream crossings. The Ramble also visits Morgan’s Quarry, a remote 19th Century flagstone quarry in the Algerine Wild Area which has a great view. Also in the Algerine, the trail passes by ancient glacier deposited boulders surrounded by lush mountain laurel. The Ramble offers more than an average chance to see wildlife, including the timber rattlesnake, one of the Commonwealth’s most fascinating creatures. If you are lucky enough to see one, please offer them respect. This hike is not recommended for novice hikers. During times of peak stream flow, avoid fording Slate Run by choosing the high water route to the Pine Creek Rail Trail via Hillborn Bridge. At the end of the hike, visit one of Slate Run’s quaint establishments for a snack or cool beverage. Get an early start!
