Trail Description

The trail passes through the rolling green hills of the Schuylkill River valley on a former rail corridor adjacent to State Highway 209. Begin at the northern end near Tamaqua, a former mining town whose historic district features many beautiful renovated structures, including the 1874 Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Passenger Station. At the trailhead just outside Tamaqua, you can see Newkirk Tunnel, an extinct coalmine that opened in 1868 and by the 1940s penetrated 2,211 feet into the mountainside. Currently gated, the tunnel is a part a state effort to clean water flowing from mines. From here the route is challenging, traversing undulating hills, many at maximum grade. The trail surface can become soft and unsuitable for biking in wet weather.
