Trail Description

This is the longest and most rugged trail in Caledonia State Park. With its trailhead at the falls on Thaddeus Stevens Historic Trail, the Charcoal Hearth Trail climbs steeply for about 10-15 minutes to Graeffenburg Mountain before leveling off then returns on a gradual and beautiful descent ending along a quiet stream near the Furnance Dam and pond. On the descent, watch for four historic charcoal hearths and an old wagon road. Keep a watchful eye out for squirrels, chipmunks, a variety of birds, and even deer that could be browsing around the next bend of this trail.
